I have a student who has been training with me for the past 2 months with no prior martial arts background to speak of. He shared with me what had happened to him last week. My student went to visit his mother in law at her house. As he entered, he accidentally stepped on the mother in law’s 150 lbs. dog who was lying on the floor next to the kitchen door. The dog jumped up and went for his right thigh. My student instinctively made a figure eight with his right leg and the dog let go. Unfortunately, the dog wasn’t finished. The dog attacked the same leg once again and my student spontaneously threw his knee to the dog’s throat causing the dog to run away whimpering.
This all happened while his 5 year old daughter was at his side. My student assures that he reacted swiftly and effectively only because of the training he had with Systema. Before the incident, he was not certain why we perform the basic movements, breathwork and core exercises in class, but now he is a believer. If he had not taken the classes and learned how to move correctly, the dog would probably have hurt him, as well as his daughter.
For those who doubt how Systema works, my student is a great example that not a person, or animal, or even nature can defeat a man who trains in Systema.

Released on DVD in 2003, Beyond the Physical raised some controversy. Mikhail Ryabko showed how to control his opponents with very little or no physical contact. Contrary to some assumptions, Mikhail demonstrated that there is nothing mystical or magic in this work; no hypnosis, no psychic energy, just the understanding of human psychology and calmly utilizing it for control. See it for yourself

Our former guest instructor Valentin Talanov made a decision to be completely separate and independent from Systema HQ Moscow and from Systema HQ Toronto.
Rather than continuing his affiliation and training with Systema founders Mikhail Ryabko and Vladimir Vasiliev, Valentin is now working with his translator and manager David Kirillov.
Instructor certifications issued by Valentin are not recognized by Systema HQ Moscow or Systema HQ Toronto.
We have also received a number of complaints regarding poor practices and statements made by David Kirillov. Please be aware of misleading and inaccurate information and feel free to contact us directly.
If a Systema affiliate becomes authorized to certify instructors, it will be announced by Mikhail and Vladimir.
Expand The bar is raised, again! by Dakhil Al Dakhil
Ever since I discovered Systema, I attend seminars to learn and grasp whatever I can. At the Legends seminar in UK last month, I had the opportunity to work with old friends and made couple of new ones.
The atmosphere was friendly as always, encouraging the learning process. However, there was something different this time. There was an amazing demonstration of skill and ability by the Legends – Mikhail and Vladimir. It seemed no matter what level you think you are in; there is still A LOT more to be done. Every time I go to a seminar, the bar gets raised. This time the bar went even higher. I wonder if there is ever a ceiling.
That's what makes Systema special. Coming from traditional martial arts background, I always knew what to do next or what to work on to get to the "next level." Here it is different. There are so many things yet to be done to improve my skills and still, I am not so sure what the next level looks like!
This is special because it reminds us that there is no finish line to perfection. No one can claim that they have reached the top. This keeps the ego out of the room (or most of it at least). Everyone is humble and in a state of constant learning.
In the concluding remarks of the seminar, Vladimir apologized for making many mistakes compared to Mikhail and said that he still needs more work to do. I have never seen such humility and respect coming from a true master; truly a living legend.
I have just completed the Appalachian Trail, a long distance hike that goes from Georgia to Maine. One question people often ask is – what can you do to train for a 2,000 mile hike? Most hikers will answer: nothing. The first half of the trail is your training for the next half.
But I have found that my 3 months of intensive training at Systema HQ Torontojust before hitting the trail was a perfect preparation for this long hike. Systema definitely helped me in many ways while I was hiking the Appalachian Trail. Here are a few direct applications that I have experienced time after time:
- Walking: Being conscious of how I walked helped me proceed in a more efficient way and prevent injuries.
- Breathing:The one step to inhale, one step to exhale pattern that we practice in Systema really helps going up long and hard slopes. Knowing you need only enough air to get the other leg forward and not to go all the way up the mountain helps a lot: just take it one step at a time and before you know it, it's all over and you can keep going without having to stop and catch your breath.
- Falling: Systema probably saved me on my trip quite a few times. Rocks, roots, trees... or cliffs, it's easy to hurt yourself in the mountains, especially when you have to carry a big backpack. But having fallen so many times in training classes has changed my attitude towards the ground. When I slipped, tripped or stumbled, my first concern was not "how can I not fall" anymore but "how can I go to the ground with the least possible damage". In 5 months, the worst that happened was me getting back up on my feet half covered in thick mud.
- Napping: I like naps. They are a great way to recover and break the day. But what should one do when there is no bed around and no grassy patch to be seen? I now find that that a nice flattish rock would do just fine: just lie down on it, feel the rock, breathe, relax and it becomes quite comfortable!
